Top tips for your AGM

4 November 2018

With many LOCs preparing to host AGMs, we asked two experienced LOC Chairs to share their top tips for organising a successful event.

Prab Boparai, Chair of Wolverhampton LOC suggests that organisers

  • Make sure you have regular ongoing contact with our members via email and newsletter
  • Add an interesting and appropriate CET lecture to the event
  • Keep AGM content brief and concise and interactive as possible
  • Choose a good venue and catering
  • Source a sponsor the event
  • Invite LOCSU representative or Commissioning Lead
  • Advertise the AGM widely via email, newsletter, social media and LOC website
  • Circulate all the necessary documents and the agenda beforehand
  • Teamwork. Ensure all the officers are primed and up to date with their input

Matt Jinkinson, Chair of Greater Manchester East LOC recommends that organisers

  • Ensure that notification goes out early and then all key milestone reminder dates are hit.
  • Make it unmissable – focus the invite on an important topic – such as a local change – which means people will need to attend to get information or hear about an important national change impacting on all
  • Link to a CET event
  • Stick to the LOCSU recommended timelines for collation of nominations for LOC members to ensure smooth running of elections on the night
  • Provide free food, if there are sufficient LOC funds
