CVD Case-Finding in Optometry

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of premature mortality in England. The 2025 Fit for the Future: 10 Year Health Plan for England committed to reducing lives lost to the biggest killers, including CVD.

LOCSU worked with LOCs who supported the pilot programmes across England. A Blueprint was then developed by LOCSU in 2026, with input from representatives from the optical sector bodies. This blueprint aims to provide a recommended model for CVD case-finding in optometry practices.

The NHS is increasingly focussing on CVD presentation through integrated neighbourhood teams, which bring together multidisciplinary professionals – including optometry – to deliver co-ordinated care closer to people’s home. LOCs should use the Blueprint to demonstrate optometry’s capacity to support.
