Early Diagnosis is Key – Glaucoma Awareness Week 2026

6 July 2026

Monday 6 July marked the start of Glaucoma Awareness Week in the UK, raising awareness of the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide.

Organised by Glaucoma UK, the event brings patients, eye care providers, health officials and the public together to encourage holding conversations about glaucoma.

Most patients at the early stages of disease report no noticeable symptoms, but early detection remains the most effective way to ensure successful treatment and prevent sight loss.

Fionnuala Kidd, Head of Regional Optometry Partnerships at LOCSU, said: “People over the age of 40 are at higher risk of developing glaucoma.

“Early detection is the most effective way to prevent or slow sight loss – make sure to have a regular sight test.”

LOCs looking to advance local pathways for glaucoma are encouraged to view our glaucoma referral filtering and monitoring pathway, refreshed in 2025 alongside related resources.

The integrated care pathway provides for referral filtering and monitoring and aims to alleviate pressures on hospital glaucoma services and provide care closer to home.

People with low risk of developing glaucoma can avoid referral to the hospital eye service, whilst others with a diagnosis – but low risk of progression – can continue to be appropriately monitored in optical practice.

A series of case studies are also available to view on our website, whilst supporting information is available in the members’ area.
