Case Study: Innovation in Eye Care during Covid-19

5 November 2020

Our new case study examines three innovative new pathways under development in different areas of the country

  • Post-operative Care following Corneal Graft surgery – Worcestershire LOC
  • Referral Refinement for suspicious swollen disc – Sandwell and Birmingham LOCs
  • YAG laser capsulotomy follow up – Dudley LOC

All three describe care that would have been delivered via hospital eye services before the Covid-19 pandemic. The new services are to be delivered in primary care optical practices using the skills and facilities of primary care practitioners, utilising IT systems to facilitate collaboration with secondary care, offering an improved patient experience as well as reducing the burden on secondary care.

Zoe Richmond, LOCSU Interim Clinical Director said “Despite the countless negatives of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is exciting to see the innovative ways of working and managing patients which have been prompted by the situation we find ourselves in. The LOCs featured in our case study have worked closely with their secondary care colleagues to develop these service innovations to meet local need, and we urge other LOCs to explore opportunities in their areas. Our Optical Lead team are on hand to help facilitate discussions and support LOCs”
