Case Study: Glaucoma Enhanced Case Finding Service proves its value in Leeds
9 December 2020
A new LOCSU Case Study examining the Glaucoma Enhanced Case Finding Service in Leeds is now available.
The service builds on a successful Glaucoma Repeat Measures service in Leeds and was commissioned in 2018, with the objectives of reducing avoidable referrals to Hospital Eye Services (HES) and improving the patient experience by providing care closer to home, in line with the NHS Long Term Plan.
Appointments take place in primary care with an accredited optometrist and the results are very positive with 75% of patients seen under the service not requiring onwards referral to HES. Patients are benefitting from greater convenience, shorter waiting times and reduced anxiety, while the burden on the HES is reduced.
Helen Lewis of Leeds CCG said “With the support of our LOC we were able to use our skilled local optometrists to provide a refinement service. This provided care closer to home for patients, reassurance for many that they did not need care of a hospital practitioner, and for those who did, quicker access and referral to the right subspecialty. We are very pleased that from a small conversation with the right people we were able to create and embed a local service with such important benefits.’’
