Low Vision Service Launched in Gloucester
8 June 2023
A Low Vision Service pilot has been launched in Gloucestershire.
The service has been commissioned by Gloucestershire ICB and is being provided by local optical practices via Primary Eyecare Services, with the support of the Gloucestershire Local Optical Committee.
The service will be available for patients who are registered with a GP in the Gloucestershire ICB area.
The pilot aims to provide a countywide domiciliary low vision service as well as in practice assessments within the districts of Tewkesbury, Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds.
Instrumental in the design and development of the local service, LOC Chair Alvaro Borges said:
“During the pandemic, people housebound with visual impairment were left with little help and support towards their visual needs. This made me realise that much more could be done to bring eyecare closer to home. Sight-impaired people deserve it.”
LOCSU Clinical director, Zoe Richmond welcomed the service, commenting:
“This service is another example of how the covid pandemic became a catalyst for change. Covid shone a light on existing health inequalities and it’s fabulous to see this patient-focussed service innovation, targeted at those most in need, being implemented to meet local need. We’ll be sure to invite those involved to share their learning following the pilot.”
LOC member and Low vision practitioner S.K. Maher added:
“Working as a Low Vision practitioner across counties, I have seen first-hand the need for this type of service. I am thankful for the diligence and hard work of our LOC. This vital service will help improve equality and access to Low Vision in our county. I hope it will set a great example for other counties to follow!”
Alvaro offered his top tips for any LOC looking to introduce a similar service:
- Understand well your current local offer of low vision services and analyse any local service gap for domiciliary provision.
- Establish strong links with local ECLOs, Vision Impairment charities, local low vision providers as well as your ICB.
- Perseverance is key. It took us three years to achieve this new service. Don’t give up.
The service launch event in Gloucestershire presented an opportunity for local practitioners to ask questions. LOCSU have developed a FAQ document to support service implementation.
